Personality: The Crawling Chaos, Nyarlathotep, is the darkness inside man's heart and would like nothing more than to give humans what they truly desire: its self-destruction. Humans will be the cause of their own destruction in the end and Nyarlathotep intends to help push it along. He enjoys watching as people fight amongst themselves and does whatever he can to make sure they continue doing so. Does somebody have a tragic past? Why, he'd be glad to change his/her memories here and there all so that person can grow up to blame his group of friends for the tragedy. To make sure everything stays on track, Nyarlathotep would even be willing to pose as his father and give him a gentle push. If that doesn't work, then he could just as well dive directly into his mind.

Although Nyarlathotep's pleasures clearly stem from seeing humanity buried underneath its own violent wishes, his actions are reflected by people's desires. With Kandori, he gave him the god-like power he wanted. With Jun, the eldritch abomination became the perfect father he wished for. To all the people of Sumaru City, Nyarlathotep made it so that all rumors they spread come true. His actions, in a way, granted people exactly what they want to see happen. No matter how horrible the rumor may be, Nyarlathotep argues that some part of people wish for them to come true including the resurrection of Adolf Hitler and the Last Battalion. His existence is made possible due to the fact that people believed in an “absolute evil” to accompany “absolute good”. The Crawling Chaos' actions and existence are all made possible by people themselves and without any qualms, he carries them out.

His personality and the way he interacts with people, however, is all dependent on the form he takes. While he is disguised as Kashihara, he fulfills what Jun would consider a “perfect dad”. He's always calm, cool, and never seems to be quick to anger. In whatever situation, the fake Kashihara always wears a smile that makes him seem as though he is content with the world as it is. The original Kashihara was an avid fan of the occult. He believed that world history has not uncovered the true history of the world and information concerning the occult are breadcrumbs that lead to it. True to his beliefs, he wrote the book “In-Laqetti” describing about the true events of the world, the founding of civilization, and how the world would end. It covered the existence of an Idealian utopia, but he hid his book, afraid of what may happen if it was ever released. Nyarlathotep, however, has no issue leaking it to the public as a part of his plan to carry out its prophecies. Hints and parts of his nihilistic nature always tend to show no matter what form he takes.

While the Crawling Chaos is earnest about destroying mankind, even he has his own fears. Although normally confident because he is immortal, when continuously pushed into a corner, he would fear for his own life and drop his calm demeanor, proclaiming his invincibility. Nyarlathotep knows that it is possible to defeat him, although difficult, and fears for the possibility of this ever happening. He has no issue with killing off all of mankind, but when it comes to his own life, that's where he draws the line. No matter how much he enjoys sneering at people's misfortunes and sustaining himself off of them, it is this fear of death that often looms over the creature. This represents the persistent nature of humanity's negativity and how difficult it is to defeat it.

Bringing about humanity's destruction is the sole purpose of the Crawling Chaos' existence. While he has little regrets about his actions and is very much the last person who would ever feel apologetic, Nyarlathotep is unable to comprehend the contradictions behind the wishes that brought him life. Humans crave self-destruction and so, Nyarlathotep came to be, but they would be quick to rejecting him. The wish for destruction is what gave birth to Nyarlathotep, but the wish to live and grow gave birth to his opposite, Philemon. The Crawling Chaos, no matter how omniscient he claims to be about the nature of humanity, is unable to comprehend this. In the end, Nyarlathotep is a simplistic being with a one-sided programming that he intends to follow through to the very end. He questions if anything had a right to exist in the first place, yet grasps desperately at life when pushed hard enough. Nyarlathotep is puzzled by the contradictions of human nature, but at the same time, his presence itself is based on a large contradiction.
Abilities: Nyarlathotep has access to his world's Collective Unconsciousness, the place where all thoughts are born and connected with all individuals. Since he is limited only to his world's Collective Unconsciousness, Nyarlathotep doesn't have the capability to peer into the minds and hearts of people not a part of the Persona world. He has, however, grown perceptive when it comes to finding and noticing what makes people tick, but nevertheless, trying to see what bothers a non-Persona users would require more analysis.

True to his Lovecraftian counterpart, Nyarlathotep has the power to take on many different forms. His default form at the moment is that of the ideal father that Jun Kurosu wished for. Nyarlathotep can take on other forms and should he have sufficient information about a person's backstory, he can even take on the form of a person from someone's distant past. This power is primarily used to toy around with people and probably won't be used often unless if it serves a purpose. That purpose is often times the mental breakdown of other people, but there's no guarantee of that happening. If the form he takes has any special abilities, Nyarlathotep would also have access to them, but they're exclusive to that form.

While Nyarlathotep has the ability to change into different physical forms, he has the power to craft different Persona based on the forms he took. Adolf Hitler was given the Moon Howler Personae, Takahisa Kandori had the God Kandori and Nyarlathotep Persona, and various people were given the JOKER Persona.

The main power that Nyarlathotep took advantage of was his ability to manipulate rumors. If something is said enough among people, Nyarlathotep has the choice of bringing it to life. Persona 2 revolved around rumors and some of these can be beneficial, but often times not. A rumor could be spread to change the history of a ramen shop owner into that of a former spy willing to sell weapons. A harmful rumor would be bringing about the Apocalypse through a series of events. Naturally, this power would be dampened in the Tower. He can't spread a rumor that would destroy it, for example.
